MILLTOWN – Zachary Schmelz, a senior at St. Mark’s High School, has been named the Indoor Track Athlete of the Year by the state’s coaches. Schmelz received the honor at the all-state banquet last week.

His senior season ended with a remarkable state championship meet. Schmelz won two events, the 400-meter dash (49.95 seconds) and the high jump (six feet). He also finished second in the 200-meter dash and third in the long jump.

Earlier this season, he posted the second-fastest time in Delaware history in the 400, finishing in 48.94. That was the 20th-best time in the country this year.

Schmelz will compete this weekend in the 200 and 400 at the New Balance National Indoor Track Championships at the Armory in New York City.
