The St. Lawrence County legislature is holding a public forum on Tuesday, Feb 19, at 5:30pm on a resolution opposing the NY SAFE Act gun control law.
According to an email campaign initiated today by County Legislator Dan Parker, "a resolution opposing the NY SAFE Act will be introduced and debated. Please come, bring your friends, and speak in support of this resolution. Without public support, it is not certain to receive enough votes to pass and be sent to the governor and the legislature."
Opposition to the SAFE Act has been growing as at least eight other county legislatures have passed resolutions calling for the law's repeal. In addition, sheriffs in Schuyler, Warren, Saratoga, Lewis and Schuyler counties have all made public statements in opposition to the strict gun control law.
Nationwide, 288 county sheriffs and sheriffs' associations across the country have stated they will not enforce President Obama's Federal gun control measures as they are seen as infrngements on people's 2nd Amendment rights.
The City Council of Ogdensburg last week also passed a resolution calling for the repeal of the SAFE Act. The Town of Lisbon has passed a similar measure yesterday.
"We, the legislators, have received numerous emails opposing the NY-SAFE Act, and I am not aware of a single correspondent who supports the act" Legislator Parker continued. "With your support, we will join the growing number of New York State counties seeking the repeal of this unconstitutional legislation."
A 2nd Amendment rally is planned in Albany on Feb. 28th to protest the law, sponsored in part by the National Rifle Association. More than 100 opponents to the law participated in a protest at the Ogdensburg AMVETS Post 19 as a fund raiser for the march in Albany.
The Watertown 9-12 Project is organizing buses to transport 2nd Amendment supporters to the "Civil Rights – 2nd Amendment Rally" at noon at the Legislative Building, 80 Swan Street, Albany as well.
Opposition to the law stems as much from the method that Governor Cuomo used to push the bill through as from the actual provisions of the bill. The bill was passed by the NY State Senate and Assembly on Jan 15, after most lawmakers had less than an hour to read and debate it.
