If you thrive on adventure and prefer hiking over lounging by a resort pool, you may want to check out the experience of staying at Concordia Eco-tents. Concordia Eco-tents can be described as 'luxury eco- camping' and they are located on the gorgeous island of St. John in the U.S.Virgin Islands.
St. John, the smallest and least populated of the three U.S. Virgin Islands, is a wonder of rocky coastline, beautiful crescent-shaped bays, and white, sugar sand beaches. There are miles of hiking trails that lead past the ruins of 18th-century Danish plantations to panoramic views. There are pastel-painted houses, funky and eclectic shops, and fun restaurants and bars in the towns of Cruz Bay and Coral Bay. St. John has a laid back, comfortable vibe..., and that's why many people rave about this island. Since almost half the island is protected National Park land, this is an off-the-beaten-path kind of vacation.
The Eco-Tents, along with Estate Concordia Studios, are located on adjacent properties, about 40 minutes from the main town of Cruz Bay. You can reach Concordia by rental car, and you travel over well paved hillside roads. If you stay here, you will have comfortable accomodations and outstanding views of the Caribbean from your front porch!
These unique eco-tents are located on the dramatic southeast side of St. John. This side has some of the most beautiful scuba diving and snorkeling in the Caribbean. From your eco-tent, you can go on several hikes, including the famous Ram Head hike that takes you across a beach covered in blue pebbles to a cliff with breathtaking views of the Caribbean on one side and the Atlantic Ocean on the other. From Concordia, you can also hike to a pristine beach called Salt Pond that is well known for superb snorkeling.
The eco-tents have state of the art eco- comforts and conveniences including private toliets, showers, solar energy and kitchen facilities in each unit. The units are cooled by the wind that blows through the tents on three sides. From your eco-tent, you can watch the sunrise on the left side and watch the sunset to the right. The best place to view these sights is from the comfort of your own deck (each have a table and chairs outside). Concordia has some of the most spectacular surroundings in St. John.
The tent-cabin seems quite spacious for two people. Or, a family of four or five can sleep on twin beds and a queen-size daybed. The dining area and large screened windows allow nature lovers to be as close to St. John's flora and fauna as possible without actually sleeping outside. The new Cafe Concordia, open during high season, offers spectacular ocean views and an informal dining. Specialties include Mahi Mahi, salmon, steak, chicken & vegetarian entrees. A wide selection of rum drinks, wine and beer as well as island-style desserts are available. The dinners we had at this restaurant were outstanding!
The Concordia Store is well-stocked with food and beverages for guest meals and snacks. Other restaurants, groceries, casual shopping, local entertainment and water sports are an easy 10 minute drive to Coral Bay, You can walk to a wacky restaurant called The Tourist Trap that is located on the way to Concordia. This is a 'must do' if you stay here. If you are interested in a different kind of vacation, that puts you close to nature in an eco friendly location with unforgetable views and experiences... check out Estate Concordia. If the eco-tents aren't quite our your style, there are also studios that are more like eco-hotel rooms! Here are details about transportation to the island of St. John.
