St. John's the Baptist 53, Neptune 45

St. John's the Baptist from Islip, NY, defeated Neptune, 53-45, at the NJ Sparks' New Years Resolution Basketball Tournament.

Both St. John's and Neptune have players with a lot of velocity, speed, and strength. Combined with their skills and talents, they are both top competitors in their respective states.

Neptune came out strong, giving good pressure defense. With 5:28 left in the first quarter, Neptune was up 5-4, and St. John's called time out. At the end of the first quarter the score was tied 12-12. St. John's Lauren Williams is a great shooter. She finished with 19 points, 4 rebounds, and 1 blocked shot.

At the half-time Neptune led 25-24. Neptune's Desiree Moss is a good scorer, attacking the basket and hitting jump shots. She finished with 17 points, 3 rebounds, 1 blocked shot, and 3 steals.

At the end of the third quarter St. John's had the lead, 34-33. St. John's Starting senior center, Lauren Parra, is great at boxing out, securing rebounds, and setting screens. She is a big factor inside. She finished with 15 rebounds, 2 steals, 2 assists, and 2 points. Neptune's Ivy Harrington and Iyonna Crenshaw work together on defense and can score on both sides of the court. Harrington finished with 11 points, 9 rebounds, 2 steals, and 1 assist. Crenshaw had 12 points, 11 rebounds, 1 blocked shot, 1 steal, and 1 assist.

Early in the fourth quarter St. John's went on a run, earning a greater lead on Neptune. With 1:13 left on the clock, St. John's up 49-43, Neptune called time-out. They returned to the floor to foul to stop the clock, but it was unsuccessful.

The MVP awards were given to Neptune's Desiree Moss and St. JOhn's Lauren Williams.
