St. Joe Michigan is stacking up some great family fun events

March 1-April 6 St. Joseph, Michigan will host the The Second Annual Build Your Way Around Town event, featuring LEGO brick building activities, family-friendly concerts, displays, competitions and a Big Build by LEGO professionals.

Stephanie Masin, director, Maud Preston Palenske Memorial Library, said "Whether you want to show your imagination with LEGO bricks or watch professional builders create an amazing display at Shadowland Ballroom, there’s family fun every weekend."

Free Blueprint Passports are available at St. Joseph Today Welcome Center and each of the activity sites that include: Box Factory for the Arts, Curious Kids’ Museum, Krasl Art Center, St. Joseph/Maud Preston Palenske Memorial Library, Shadowland Ballroom, Silver Beach Carousel and The Heritage Museum and Cultural Center. Abonmarche, an engineering and architectural firm in Benton Harbor, Michigan, is sponsoring the events and prizes.

Participants should visit each of the sites, and get the passport stamped to enter a drawing to win a LEGO package on March 31.

Admission to most events is free, and many are within walking distance of each other as are family-friendly hotels, restaurants and stores.

Feb. 23-April 6

LEGO Brick Display at the Silver Beach Carousel/Silver Beach Center. Local amateur builders will showcase their LEGO building imaginations and kits during carousel hours. Admission to the carousel house, Silver Beach Amusement Park Museum and the display is free. Visit for hours and more information.

March 1

Children’s How to Build Workshop at the Krasl Art Center (KAC). Faculty member Keith Stevens will lead a free workshop for kindergarten eighth graders from 10 a.m. to noon. KAC will provide the LEGO bricks for this event that will help enhance skills for the competitions at The Heritage Museum and Cultural Center on March 15.

Children’s and Family Concerts at Box Factory for the Arts. The Deep Fried Pickle Project will perform a Children’s Show, 4 to 5 p.m. and a Family Show, 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Tickets for the Children’s Concert are $5 per child, free for parents and for the Family Concert tickets are $10 for general admission, $8 for students and seniors and free for children 12 and younger.

Kids’ Musical Instrument Workshop at Box Factory for the Arts, 5 to 6 p.m. Children are encouraged to bring their own LEGO and DUPLO bricks to build a playable musical instrument.

March 6

Builders’ Bash Family Fun Night at Silver Beach Carousel, 4 to 8:30 p.m. This is an opportunity to meet local builders who contributed to the Awesome LEGO Brick Display in the carousel house. Fun activities, free cotton candy, prize drawings and rides on the carousel for half off (only $1) will entertain the entire family.

March 8

LEGO Bingo Game at Curious Kids’ Museum, 1 to 3 p.m. Four games geared for ages 4 to 6 years old with prizes awarded to winners. For free admission to the event, enter through the brown door located on the south side of the museum.

March 15

LEGO Bricks Building Competition at The Heritage Museum and Cultural Center. Ages 5 to 7 and 8 to 10 will compete for prizes from 9 to 10 a.m. and ages 11 to 13 and 14 to 18 will compete from 11 a.m. to noon. Ages 5 to 10 are to bring their pre-built LEGO or MEGA BLOKS creations and ages 11 to 18 are to bring their own bricks and build their creation in 45 minutes. Guidelines and registration information are available at The Heritage Museum.

March 22

LEGO Bricks Movie Mania at the St. Joseph/Maud Preston Palenske Memorial Library will provide free family entertainment:

10:30-11:45 a.m.: “Batman the Movie: DC Super Heroes Unite”

Noon-12:30 p.m.: “Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Out”

1:30-3 p.m.: “The Adventures of Clutch Powers”

3:15-4 p.m.: “Ninjago: Masters of Spinjitzu”

March 27-30

BIG Build at Shadowland Ballroom/Silver Beach Center. Professional LEGO builder Jason Spear and the Western Michigan LEGO Train Club will create an amazing display March 27 during Family Fun Night, 4-8:30 p.m.. Visitors can see the finished model and talk with the professional builders about their work March 28-30. Admission and parking are free. For more information and hours, visit
