The St. Hugh-Steinway Concert Series closes its 2014 with Metropolitan Opera stars soprano Elizabeth Caballero and tenor James Valenti performing famous arias and duets from operas and zarzuelas. The concert will be held on Friday, May 16 at St. Hugh Catholic Church in Coconut Grove. They will be accompanied by pianist Roberto Berrocal.

Caballero has been praised by the New York Times for her “pearly tone, exacting technique and brazen physicality.” She made her debut at The Metropolitan Opera as Musetta in La Bohème in its Opera in the Parks series, and has been garnering accolades in roles as varied as both Musetta and Mimi in La Bohème, Cio Cio San in Madama Butterfly, Violetta in La Traviata, Anne Trulove in The Rake’s Progress, Nedda in Pagliacci and Susanna in Le Nozze di Figaro.

Valenti has built a reputation for his elegant musicianship, stage presence and ardent vocal style. After his professional debut at age 25 at the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma, he has performed in many of the most celebrated opera theaters in the world, including Teatro alla Scala, the Royal Opera House London, Bayerische Staatsoper Munich and The Metropolitan Opera.

He has showcased his vocal ability and acting versatility in a variety of roles including the title role in Don Carlo, Alfredo in La Traviata, the Duke in Rigoletto, Edgardo in Lucia di Lammermoor, and most recently, Lt. Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly at the Met.

St. Hugh Parish, which sponsors the series, has decided that a portion of the proceeds from this season’s as well as future concerts will be donated to St. Hugh Charities, which supports various causes including the Grove Outreach, St. Vincent de Paul Society, Mission St. Ann, Grove for Ghana and Mindo Futures.

St. Hugh Church is located at 3460 Royal Road, Coconut Grove, 33133. For more information and tickets, visit sthughconcerts.org, or call 305-318-5008 or 305-444-8363.
