According to Canadian Olympic medalist Kristina Groves of CBC on Monday, Marianne St-Gelais should be considered a medal contender in the women's 500m short track speed skating event at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi.

The reason why St-Gelais is being considered is because China's Meng Wang will not be competing at the Olympic Winter Games in Sochi. Wang injured her ankle when she collided with a teamate while training in Shanghai according to CNTV.

Wang was the dominant favourite in the event, having won the World Championship, and the overall World Cup standings the last two years in the women's 500m.

St-Gelais is also getting consideration for a medal because of her outstanding performance in the 500m heat on Monday.

St-Gelais won the silver medal in the women's 500m at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver behind Wang.

Other short track speed skaters who will be in contention for a medal are Kexin Fan of China, Arianna Fontana of Italy, and Seung-Hi Park and Suk-Hee Shim of South Korea. The women's 500m short track speed skating semi-finals and finals will be on Thursday.
