Things were looking up Thursday night for St. Francis/North Branch's Erynn Downey as she scored a goal and assisted on two others to lead the Fighting Saints to a 9-1 win over the St. Louis Park Orioles at the Rec Center.
The Fighting Saints, playing in their first season in the Mississippi 8 Conference after leaving the North Suburban, got on the board 1;22 into the game as Downey got a pass from Natalie St. Marie and put it in the net. They would score five more first period goals, starting with Downey's centering pass to Olivia Zebro and she put SF/NB ahead by two. Their next two goals came while Natalie St. Marie was serving an interference penalty. Downey would pick up her second assist on Katie Sigfrinius' rebound goal and Kailey Wagner would score unassisted.
Goal number five came from Maddi Kaehler as she got a pass from Wagner and scored from the right point. The Fighting Saints first period scoring ended on Paige Swanson's left side goal with 1:30 left.
SF/NB would open the second period scoring on Holly Anderson's power play goal. But there would be some good news for St. Louis Park fans as they saw Molly Arntson receive a pass from Anna Basill and put it into the net to erase the zero from their end of the scoreboard. Kaylyn Forliti would round out the second period scoring with :56.9 left and the lead was seven.
The Orioles got some good third period goal tending from freshman Anna Gleason, who was playing due to Peyton Stafne's undisclosed injury. She made three outstanding saves. But she would give up one more Fighting Saints goal, coming on the rebound from Jessica St. Marie with :46 left.
SF/NB improved their record to 5-73 and will be off until Monday, December 30 when they play in the opening round of the Varsity Girls White Division of the Schwan Cup at 2:30 against the Luverne Cardinals on Rink 4. St. Louis Park fell to 0-10-1 and will host the Totino-Grace Eagles on Saturday, December 21 in a 6 PM game at the Rec Center.
