During the last weekend in September, a good time was had by all at the St. Charles Oktoberfest in St. Charles, Missouri.
This festival included fine German music, food, and of course, beer. The main reason to attend Oktoberfest, however, was to participate in the Wiener Takes All dachshund race. With many prizes to be had, it was the dachshund owner's golden opportunity to snatch up valuable coupons, delicious doggy treats, and gift baskets.
There were gorgeous dachshunds of all shapes and sizes. Barking galore. And costumes that would make even the manliest of dachshunds cringe.
After turning in paperwork at the busy registration table, dachshund owners stood in anticipation for the most exciting part of the whole day - the races!
Dachshunds were put into groups based on certain variables (such as size) and were put into boxes at the starting line with approximately six dogs in each group. The boxes were opened all at once to roars of cheers for Molly, Miley, Betsy, Booboo, and Leroy - just to name a few.
It is definitely worth the trip! The only downside is that if you are planning on taking your dachshund next year, dogs are not allowed onto the regular festival grounds before/after the races. So be prepared to do something with your pup if you plan to stay for any of the other festivities!
(A special dachshund named Miles ran right out of Box 1, out of the fence, and away from the race as fast as possible. No owners specifically mentioned here....)
