The Daytona Beach Shores Department of Public Safety is seeking information about a St. Augustine man killed in a traffic accident on South Atlantic Avenue early Friday morning. 42-year old Michael Viola of St. Augustine was driving “…at speeds up to 110 miles per hour…” before hitting a curb and going airborne, according to Daytona Beach Shores Public Safety spokesperson Sgt. Michael Fowler. Investigators say the car then exploded after hitting a light pole 13 feet above the ground.

Vehicle “fully engulfed” in flames

A Daytona Beach Shores officer heard a loud explosion from the accident shortly after midnight Friday, and found the fiery crash located at the front of the Oceans 8 condominium. The silver Toyota hatchback was “…fully engulfed…” prior to the arrival of the officer, and Daytona Beach Shores fire crews responded to the scene and quickly extinguished the blaze. Police say South Atlantic Avenue was shut down until 6:30 Friday morning during the accident investigation.

Police seek information about victim

Sgt. Fowler says Viola was also the registered owner of the car, and investigators are trying to find out more about why he was in the area. If you have information about Mr. Viola or the events prior to the crash, you can contact Daytona Beach Shores Traffic Homicide Investigator Richard Rademacher at 386-763-5347.
