I'm continuing this week with recipes that would be fitting for Valentine's Day. So far, I've shared candy recipes and one cake recipe that would all be special treats for those special people in your life. In case you missed any of them, here are the links to all the recipes:

If you just happen to have on hand a can of chocolate syrup, then you already have the main ingredient for the recipe I'm about to give you along! The recipe, "Chocolate Squares", is a rich chocolate sheet cake that is iced with a creamy chocolate icing. For the chocolate fan, it can't get much better than this! Easy to make, it's one of those recipes I like since you'll most likely already have the ingredients on hand to make it.

This is made simply by creaming butter and sugar together, then adding eggs. You then add flour, baking powder, and salt to the creamed mixture, followed by a large can of chocolate syrup. This is then baked in a shallow pan and while it bakes, you can be making the icing. When the cake comes from the oven, pour this hot icing over the cake and let it cool. You let it stand until it's cool then it's ready to devour! Have some cold milk on hand to make this taste extra good!

The chocolate syrup in this recipe is easily found in the grocery store. The brand I find most readily available is the "Hershey's" chocolate syrup sold in cans weighing about a pound. If you live in an area where other brands of chocolate syrup are sold, keep in mind to use about 2 cups of chocolate syrup, which would be equivalent to about a one pound can of the syrup.

If you have a real chocolate fan that you want to make something special for this Valentine's, impress them with this!

  • 1 stick butter, softened
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 4 eggs
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1-1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • a pinch of salt
  • 1 large can (about 1 pound) Hershey's chocolate syrup

Cream together the butter and sugar. Add the eggs, one at a time. Combine the dry ingredients and add to the creamed mixture. Pour in the can of chocolate syrup and blend well. Turn into a greased pan, about 9x13 inches, and bake at 350 degrees for about 30-40 minutes or until cake tests done. While cake bakes, prepare the following icing:

  • 1/2 stick butter
  • 1/2 cup evaporated milk
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips

In a saucepan, place the butter, evaporated milk and sugar. Bring to a boil and boil for 2-3 minutes. Stir in the chocolate chips, stirring until melted. Remove from heat and beat until it begins to thicken. When cake comes from the oven, pour this icing over all and let stand until cool. Yield: about 12 servings.
