With the upcoming batch of next-generation game consoles in the wings, companion apps for mobile and table devices are quickly gaining in popularity. Today, Square Enix, the gaming gurus behind the PS3/PS4/Windows massively multiplayer online game Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn, have launched their own app companion for iOS devices (aka iPhone/iPad), titled Final Fantasy XIV: Libra Eorzea.
Obviously the goal of Libra Eorzea was not to introduce app with a memorable (or pronounceable) name, but to create a database of all things FF XIV.
For users who do not have a Realm Reborn account, the app can be used as a simple “comprehensive game database that can be accessed offline”. However if you have an active account, the app can serve as a “character profile viewer for reviewing gear and attributes” that will also, “browse the profiles of other characters in their Free Company, Linkshell, or use the search function to view details on other players and Free Companies. Moreover, players can even learn where fellow adventurers acquired their gear.”
This launch is the first stage of Libra Eorzea’s rollout. As mentioned in their press release, “Square Enix plans to offer additional features in the future, as well as an Android OS version, which is currently in development.”
Overall the app's database is graphically limited, with only the most basic information and does not lend itself to exploration of content. Its no threat at all to fan-websites, such as A Realm Reborn Community Wiki, which offer far more content, detail, and explanation of the same items.
Final Fantasy XIV: Libra Eorzea is available for free though iTunes app store.
