According to a May 1, 2014, AP/Yahoo!Sports report, American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas, will be filled to capacity to see of the Mavs can fight off elimination at the hands of the Spurs. Opening tipoff is slated for tonight at 8:10 p.m. EST (7:10 p.m. CST/6:10 p.m. MST/5:10 p.m. PST) on ESPN (National TV) and at Watch-ESPN Live Stream page (online).

After losing home-court advantage with a loss in Game 2, the (3-2) San Antonio Spurs wasted no time in getting even with the (2-3) Dallas Mavericks. Consecutive wins have Gregg Popovich’s top-seeded team back in business, and with a golden opportunity to close out Rick Carlisle and the eighth-seeded Mavericks.

If 2014 NBA playoffs oddsmakers are correct, this is far as Dallas will go in this year’s postseason. Moments removed from tipoff, San Antonio is a three-point favorite against Dallas this evening in the ATS department. The OVER/UNDER is set at a combined total of 198 points and alternate lines go as follows: Spurs -160 vs. Mavs +140.

For the defending Western Conference champions, this team has found ways to win despite not playing with as much effort as Popovich would like. An SI report on May 1 highlights how the Spurs have exploited the Mavericks defense by hitting the open shots.

In the last few instances, San Antonio has done a great job of converting from behind the arc, while Dallas has been unable to defend the 3-ball. It’s going to be very interesting to see what types of adjustments Carlisle will make when his team takes the court with the season on the line tonight.

Before Game 6, the 2002 NBA Coach of the Year was asked if his team’s woes were a result of a physical or a mental issue. In his response, Carlisle explains how he believes the Mavericks are suffering from both, but that defense was the key for turning the corner.

“Whatever percent it is physical and mental, we’ve got to get it fixed,” he said. “Our obsession at this point has to be with defense, defending through the shot clock. They hit us with a lot of points late in the shot clock again, and this is one of their strengths. We’ve just got to bear down and do better in that area.”
