Sprite for hangovers? The lemon-lime soda for hangovers has shown to cure many of the hangover symptoms because it breaks down acetaldehyde which is produced by the body after alcohol consumption. Acetaldehyde is a trouble maker not just as a first metabolite of alcohol but also as an irritant and a probable carcinogen. Some of the adverse effects of alcohol are thought to be caused not by the ethanol itself, but by ethanol’s first metabolite, acetaldehyde, reported CBS News on Oct. 9, 2013.
“A study published in the September 2013 issue of Food and Function showed that chemicals in the non-caffeinated beverage can halt that awful next-day feeling.”
In the study, researchers in China compared 57 drinks including a Bloody Mary, herbal tea, black coffee and Sprite in regard to its effects on hangovers. The lemon-lime soda Sprite turned out to be the winner and the most effective remedy against hangovers.
Interestingly, unlike Sprite, herbal teas made hangover symptoms like headache, drowsiness, concentration problems, dry mouth, dizziness, gastrointestinal complaints, sweating, nausea, hyper-excitability and even anxiety worse.
The reason why Sprite was the winner in curing a hangover is due to the fact that the lemon-lime soda breaks down acetaldehyde (CH3 CHO) which is produced after the consumption of alcohol.
Acetaldehyde is an organic chemical compound found widely in nature. Acetaldehyde occurs naturally in coffee, bread, ripe fruit, and is produced by plants as part of their normal metabolism. Too much acetaldehyde or acetaldehyde applied to the surface skin, however, can be an irritant and toxic. As an air pollutant coming from automotive exhaust or from smoke is suspected to be a carcinogen.
Normally, acetaldehyde breaks down naturally in the human body. After too much alcohol consumption, too much acetaldehyde produced in the liver, however, leads to hangover symptoms.
Since non-caffeinated lemon-lime Sprite breaks down acetaldehyde, the sooner Sprite is consumed after drinking too much alcohol, the faster it can break down acetaldehyde.
So, is Sprite a cure for hangovers? According to the Chinese study, absolutely.
