Sprite for hangovers? Yes, says Chinese researchers, who claim they can cure that horrible morning after feeling before it’s even started. The magical elixir is no strange concoction, contains no unusual ingredients, and is already canned for us and ready to drink. It’s Sprite, reports CBS News on Oct. 9.
The researchers took at a second look at hangovers, not from the angle of how to deal with the resulting symptoms of dehydration, but took aim at stopping a potential hangover before the symptoms of a headache, nausea, achiness etc. even start to ramp up.
By analyzing the process of how alcohol is broken down internally, researchers at Sun Yat-Sen University in Guangzhou, China determined that our bodies go through a two-stage metabolic process to break down ethanol, or pure alcohol.
Without going into the science of it all – the explanation involves metabolizing the alcohol into the organic compound acetaldehyde through an enzyme called alcohol dehydrogenase, and then breaking the compound further down into acetate – the scientists said it works, and when it comes to that sickly feeling after a night of imbibing, we’ll try anything.
The researchers reportedly analyzed 57 different drinks, including various teas, herbal infusions and carbonated beverages, and measured their effect on the acetaldehyde – which is the compound that actually creates the “hangover” effect in our bodies.
While some herbal teas slowed down the process, a drink called “Xue bi,” a carbonated drink closely related to Sprite, actually sped up the enzymes and assisted in breaking down the alcohol.
Does it really work? Try it, and post your thought below. Meanwhile, does anyone know of any good drinks to mix with Sprite?
