Sprinkles cupcake ATMs get mixed reviews - Is it just a pink vending machine?

Sprinkles Cupcakes, a Beverly Hills based confectionary, has revolutionized the way cupcakes can be served to the public, 24 hours a day. The cupcake ATM is now a national sensation. Sprinkles launched its cupcake ATMs in New York this week. ATMs are currently located in Dallas, Chicago, Atlanta, Las Vegas, and Beverly Hills.

According to Sprinkles.com, “Sprinkles Cupcakes are handcrafted from the finest ingredients, including sweet cream butter, bittersweet Belgian chocolate, pure Madagascar Bourbon vanilla, fresh bananas and carrots, real strawberries and natural citrus zests. Topped with Sprinkles trademark modern dots, rich chocolate sprinkles from France or seasonal sugar decorations, Sprinkles cupcakes are a deliciously sophisticated update on an American classic.”

The cupcake craze has been responsible for TV shows like Cupcake Wars, DC Cupcakes, and The Cupcake Girls. America certainly loves its cupcakes, but is a 24-hour sugar-dispensing ATM a good idea? If you are Sprinkles Cupcakes, it is a very good idea. The machine can hold a maximum of 760 cupcakes in 20 different flavors. Cost of a single cupcake is $4.25. Cupcake treats are also available for dogs. For $5, pet owners can purchase two mini-cupcakes for their dog.

Sprinkles has 28 flavors of cupcakes, including some interesting choices like Cuban coffee, chai latte, ginger lemon, and pumpkin. Some flavors are seasonal. The famous red velvet cupcake comes in regular, gluten-free, sugar-free, and vegan varieties. For customers who aren’t so daring, more mainstream flavors like chocolate, vanilla, lemon, and banana are on the menu, too.

Critics of the machine claim that it is not a good idea for an already obese America to have access to even more sugar and calories, it is a waste of packaging and resources, and it is really nothing more than a pink vending machine. Sprinkles Cupcakes offers several services other than its bakery and cupcake ATMs. Services include delivery of quantity orders (to limited areas), wedding towers and favor boxes, party rooms at their locations, and the Sprinkles Mobile that can be rented for private parties and events.
