Most of the past few weeks have been on the chilly side and downright frigid most recently. An active storm track also saw several storms impact the area from mid to late December. We have returned to a drier pattern this past week and now we will add some warmth to the equation most of this upcoming week.
The jet stream is pushing northward back into Canada, which will keep the coldest air north of the border. At the same time a large upper level ridge over the southeast portion of the country, along with surface high pressure, will bring a west to southwest airflow into the Northeast. The milder air begins to overspread the Springfield area on Tuesday and is expected to be around into next weekend. Although a weak cold front will work its way through here sometime later Wednesday it should only knock temperatures temporarily back to normal, before rebounding again next weekend. Low pressure to our north may swing another cold front through here Friday night or Saturday. Any precipitation associated with this system will most likely be in liquid form, with a chance of some mixed precipitation at the onset.
Ah, but what about you snow lovers? There is still plenty of winter left and hints that some really cold air will push down into the lower forty-eight beginning mid January. And, with that a better chance of seeing some flakes once again. This milder period will not last that long.
In the short term a cold front will introduce colder air on Monday, before high pressure builds in by Tuesday. The pieces will then be in place to bring in the milder temperatures, along with dry weather, through mid week. It will be a quiet pattern for the local area.
A weak cold front cools temperatures for Thursday, with the mercury rebounding again by the weekend.
