Spring has arrived in Central Florida, and now is when most people think about planting a vegetable garden. Gardening here is different than anywhere else you may have lived, and knowing the unique aspects of Florida gardening will help you grow your best garden ever.
The Osceola County Extension Service is offering a free class for county residents in an effort to promote successful gardens. Learn the basics of growing vegetable gardens in Florida; the different gardening seasons, what to grow this time of year, how to care for your vegetables, and common pests and diseases that may attack your crops. Armed with this knowledge, you'll be ready to go out and start planting.
The class will be held on Tuesday, February 28 from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm at Extension Services, Osceola Heritage Park, 1921 Kissimmee Valley Lane, Kissimmee (Located at Bill Beck Blvd. & US 192). An interactive map is conveniently located adjacent to this article. Registration is required. Call 321-697-3000.
When you're ready to plant, you can find a wide selection of vegetable and herb plants at the Sanford Farm Swap Meet (held the second and fourth Saturdays of every month in building Y at Flea World) and through Homegrown Co-op's Online Farmers Market. Both locations feature local products supporting local farmers, and you'll find many unusual or rare varieties not available in commercial nurseries. Try some in your garden!
