Spring Travel Alert: All-Male Drag Ballet Company Performs in Vail, CO

When we spring forward the clocks on March 9, the transition into warmer temps will soon follow as does plans for spring break travel. Ditch the swimsuit and sand and head to Beaver Creek, one of the Vail Valley's most pristine alpine resort communities, for spring skiing. Not only notable for it's world-class ski mountain, Beaver Creek also offers visitors many cultural events and activities all year long.

You may not be a ballet aficionado, but you simply cannot miss the all-male drag ballet company, Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo! On Tuesday, March 18 at 7:30pm, the Vilar Performing Arts Center in Beaver Creek presents a ballet repertoire that is playful and an entertaining view of traditional, classical ballet in parody form – especially once you realize that the “ballerinas” are part of the all-male drag ballet company, Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo. Performing four programs, Swan Lake, Patterns in Space, Go For Barocco and Paquita, Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo (also known as Trocks) will enchant you with a loving critique of the conventions and traditions of ballet. Under the helm of Tory Dobrin, Trocks Artistic Director, the en travesti ballet company has quickly become an international dance phenomenon, performing canonical works alongside more obscure ballets, dolled up in fabulous costumes, thick makeup, and sporting Ken-doll wigs—all en pointe. The fact that men dance all the parts—heavy bodies delicately balancing on toes as swans, nymphs, princesses—enhances, rather than mocks, the spirit of dance as an art form, delighting knowledgeable ballet audiences and novices alike.

“We are thrilled to be bringing the tutu and pointe shoe clad men from Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo to the Vilar Performing Arts Center. The way in which these dancers perform will truly entertain the audience, from the exquisite jetés and fouettés across the stage to the heart-wrenching Dying Swan in a fuss of lost feathers,” said Kris Sabel, Executive Director, Vilar Performing Arts Center. “This is a dance performance you will not want to miss.”
