Last year Dahlonega, Georgia made history by becoming a certified trail town, and then it made history again by celebrating the first annual Spring on Springer Fest. Now every year Appalachian Trail hikers that start in the southern terminus of the AT, which is Amicalola Falls State Park, can take part in their annual hiking season kickoff. Trail fest at Dahlonega, Georgia. Trail Fest is a three day event that takes place in the town of Dahlonega and commemorates all NOBO (North Bound) trail hikers. The official hiking season for the AT usually starts the third week of March. According to dahlonegatrailfest.org, this years Dahlonega Trail fest is scheduled to take place March 22-24, 2013 starting at 3pm.
That is next weekend from the date of this article publication. This is going to be one awesome weekend and one that AT hikers will not soon forget. Last year the guest speaker for the first ever celebration seen Nimble Will Nomad. For those of us that hike the trail regularly and are part of the Appalachian Trail in a big way will recall that Nimble Will Nomad is one of the celebrities of the trail. To hear him speak and meet him is a very big honor. Nimble Will Nomad is also a triple crown winner, hiking the AT, the CDT and the CDC all in one calendar year, a feat not many have completed! For this year's events, we will welcome some record holders of the Appalachian Trail, including, Warren Doyle who is the current thru hiker completion record holder and Jenniffer Pharr Davis who currently holds the trails record for the fastest thru hike completion.
There will be bands and vendors and all sorts of talks and gear and food to indulge in. According to the event's Facebook page, Woodmen Of the World will be at the celebration and will play a very big role in this years activities. So have fun and if you are planning a thru hike for the 2013 year, good luck and do not forget your 2013 AT Data Book, the book can save your life when you are in a rock and a hard place with water or food!
