Spring Lake Park/St.Anthony Panthers beat St. Louis Park Orioles

It was the battle of the SLPs Saturday afternoon at The Rec Center where eighth grader Taylor Turnquist scored two goals, including the game winner with 3:03 left to lead the Spring Lake Park/St. Anthony Panthers to a 4-3 win over the St. Louis Park Orioles.

It was a back and forth game with both teams tallying in the first period.  The Panthers scored first on a goal from Kim Patterson with assists from Maggie Ronning and Miranda Mulvihill and St. Louis Park ended a two game scoring drought as Leah Schrank scored an unassisted goal.

Neither team erased the ones from the East Rink scoreboard in the second period, though both teams had opportunities to take the lead.  SLP/SA's Abby Armstrong headed down the ice short-handed but the puck deflected off of St. Louis Park goalie Hannah Brodersen.  The Orioles had a five on three situation with 2:55 left which became four on three a minute later and they couldn't put the puck in the net.

With :31 left in the period, Mulvihill and the Orioles Lauren Brunn-Bryant got into a fight, disqualifying both players for the rest of the game.

The third period had back and forth scoring, starting with a goal from St. Louis Park's Anna Basill, followed by Turnquist's first goal.  Lauren Greenbush put the Orioles in front but the Panthers came back Taylor Patterson's goal.

It looked like the game would go into overtime.  But it was Turnquist's shot from the left point that turned out to be the game winner for SLP/SA.

SLP/SA, which has nine ninth graders rostered, improved to 3-5 and returns home to Fogerty Arena on Thursday,December 15 to face the Irondale Knights.  St. Louis Park fell to 1-7, losing their seventh straight game and heads to Minnehaha Academy Tuesday, December 13 to take on the Redhawks.
