Spring into the season’s first car show like a lion (Photos)

We’ve braved another long Colorado winter (actually, it wasn’t that bad). We are now seeing that typical weather pattern where we have more frequent nice sunny spring days with only occasional spring snow storms. It’s time to finish up your winter car projects and get your classic car ready for some summer cruising and car shows!

In Northern Colorado, the unofficial start of the car season is the Poudre Valley Lions Club Car Show. This is always one of the first car shows each year and it is coming up on Saturday, April 20th, 2013. Each year for the past ten years the Poudre Valley Lion’s Club, based out of Fort Collins, Colorado has sponsored this event. For the last seven years this show has been held at the American Eagle (Budweiser) Distribution Center at I-25 and Crossroads Boulevard in Loveland, Colorado, a great central location for anyone residing in Northern Colorado. Last year there were over 60 vehicles on display, with a nice mix of street rods, muscle cars and restored classic cars. I’ve been to this show several times but it’s always changing. Each year at least 1/3 of the vehicles are new to the show. Also, many of the “regulars” that come each time are car folks that have more than one car, so they mix things up by rotating which car they bring each year.

Local businesses donate everything from tool kits to restaurant gift cards that are raffled off to the show attendees and participants. The show is free for attendees and just $15 to enter a vehicle, with all proceeds going to support sight and hearing programs sponsored by the Lions Clubs. In 2011, the Poudre Valley Club helped 38 kids get glasses or hearing aids. Many of the referrals the Lions Club receive come from school nurses who help identify children from families that can’t afford to provide these needed items themselves. You can help out the Lions Club effort by dropping off your old eye wear at Lions-sponsored collection boxes in your community. Look at libraries, schools, coffee shops, eye doctors and places of worship for the Lions collection boxes. See the attached slide show to appreciate the wide variety of collectable cars that were present at last year’s Poudre Valley Lions Club Car Show. See you at 3800 Clydesdale Parkway (Exit 259 at I25 and Crossroads Boulevard) on Saturday, April 29th, 2013 from 8:30 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. Being a spring car show, they have an alternative date of April 27th in case we get rained out on the 20th.

Answer to last week’s Trivia Question: Ford dealers in the Denver metro area sold approximately 1000 of the limited edition High Country Special Mustangs from 1966 through 1968.
