It took a while for spring to make it to New York City, but now that it's here and we've finally gotten used to leaving our jackets at home, we turn our sights to spring cocktails. While it may seem too warm for Irish coffees and mocha martinis, there are ways to incorporate caffeine into a cocktail more besuiting the warmer weather.
Nespresso has offered up a number of drink options that take advantage of their latest machine, Vertuoline, and we've spiked them up just a bit for spring. Featuring barcoded dome-shaped coffee capsules and Centrifusion technology which produces an even richer, smoother "crema" (the small head of foam that has become a signature for Nespresso), Vertuoline's biggest innovation is the ability to produce both the brand's traditional espresso (2 oz) and regular old American coffee (8 oz) pours in one machine (see below to WIN your own Vertuoline machine!). Let the rooftop parties and outdoor brunches begin:
Spiked Iceberg Latte
- 1 capsule Decaffeinato Intenso Grand Cru (or other Vertuoline Espresso)
- 1 1/2 oz Blue Chair Bay Coconut Rum (or other coconut rum)
- 3 oz Coconut Water
- 2 oz Skim Milk
- 2 Tbsp Agave Nectar
- 2 Cups Cube Ice
Combine all ingredients except ice and coffee in a cocktail shaker. Stir until the agave nectar dissolves. Add ice, shake well to chill. Strain into pint glass or large coffee glass filled with fresh ice. Garnish with mint sprig.
Caffeinated Aperol Spritz
- 1 capsule Nespresso Diavolitto
- 2 oz Aperol Aperitivo
- 3 oz Prosecco
- Orange Slice for Garnish
In a mixing glass, combine espresso and Aperol over ice. Stir well to chill. Strain into a large glass filled with fresh ice. Garnish with an orange slice.
Campari and Aranciata Caffe Freddo
- 1 capsule Elvazio (Coffee)
- 2 oz Campari
- 2 Tbsp Orange Peel (about 3 pieces of sliced peel 3/4 in x 1 inch each)
- 2 Tbsp Sugar or 1 1/2 oz Simple Syrup
- 1/4 Cup Ice and more for glass
- 3 oz Blood Orange Soda
Place orange peel an sugar/syrup into a large heat-proof glass. Let sit for a few minutes to macerate. Brew coffee directly over peel and sugar, stir to blend. Fill a large cocktail shaker with ice and quickly pour coffee mixture into the shaker. Shake well to chill completely. Fill a cold VertuoLine recipe glass with fresh ice, add blood orange soda, and gently pour strained coffee over the back of a spoon onto the soda. Garnish with an orange slice.
Iced Irish Coffee
- 1 capsule Elvazio or Melozio Coffee
- 2 oz Irish Coffee
- 1 1/2 oz Two Gingers Irish Whiskey
- 2 Dashes Orange Bitters
- 1 oz Demerara Simple Syrup (brown sugar syrup) or to taste.
- Fresh Whipped Cream, chilled
Brew coffee and stir in simple syrup until well dissolved. Add whiskey and bitters, and stir lightly. Strain into a half-pint glass filled with fresh ice, and top with a thin layer of chilled whipped cream. Grate a small amount of cinnamon and garnish with an orange slice.
