Spring cleaning with a green twist (Video)

Spring cleaning is a tradition in many homes. While people in colder climates will use the time to air out their homes from being closed up all winter, in South Florida it is the opposite. As the heat of summer gets closer it is a good time to make sure your homes are fresh and clean as they will most likely be closed up to ward of the heat of the summer and keep the cool air conditioning inside.

Indoor air quality is very important for all of us especially those with asthma, allergies or other breathing issues. You want to keep your home clean without a lot of dust buildup. Spring cleaning is when we really go the extra step and move our furniture, clean behind stoves and bring out the heavy duty cleaning supplies. This is the perfect opportunity to introduce green cleaning to your routine. Traditional cleaners contain many toxic chemicals and damages your indoor air quality. Do your family a favor this year and go green. The video attached has a number of recipes to make your own cleaners out of baking soda, vinegar, lemons and more. If you miss the fragrance you can add essential oils to your mix and they add additional benefits as well. Tea Tree oil, Rosemary, Eucalyptus or Peppermint all have antibacterial properties as well as smelling great.

Another great tip for your spring cleaning routine, take the money you saved from not purchasing all of the commercial cleaning products and purchase a few indoor plants. Keeping plants inside can actually reduce toxic fumes and off gassing from items in your house like carpets, new furniture and paint. A few good varieties to look for include the Spider plant, Snake plant, and Golden Pothos.
