Spring Cleaning Anyone?!


Do you know how to cleanse?
Every day we are exposed to toxic substances in the air we breathe, the water we drink, and the foods we eat. It is important to know the facts before starting any detox or cleanse. There are several decisions to make when choosing the right cleanse for you. A cleanse is an opportunity to give your system a rest from the major toxins, specifically sugar, caffeine, and other preservatives.

Tips:
- If you are choosing an over-the-counter cleanse, be sure to follow the instructions regarding your intake for before, during and after the cleanse.

-Know that there are other options to cleanse in the supermarket other than cleansing products. See a registered dietitian or your doctor to develop your individualized cleanse using foods.

Benefits of cleansing:

-Reduce the toxic burden on the body

-Remove elements that can lead to diseases

-Cleanse the major organs of the body, especially the liver and intestines

Conditions associated with toxic overload:

-Headaches

-Muscle aches and pains

-Joint pain

-Allergy or flu-like symptoms

-Chronic fatigue

-Irritability, mental confusion

The GI tract itself is subject to damage by eating the wrong foods...or not eating the right foods. The liver can be overburdened by the substances we expose it to either by choice or by circumstances not in our control. We can promote the health of these important organs by eating plenty of fruits, vegetables and whole grains.
