Spring clean with items from your kitchen

Spring cleaning takes on a new meaning once you remove toxic chemicals from your cupboards, clean naturally, and enjoy the "green" you will save by using the items you cook with already!

Diluted White Vinegar - A 1:1 ratio of white vinegar to water can be used as an all purpose cleaner.  Safe to use on windows, hardwood floors, and countertops. The solution dissolves dirt, soap scum and hard water deposits from smooth surfaces. It is an excellent additive when washing your clothes.  Add a few drops of your favorite essential oil and use it as an aromatic disinfectant. With its antiseptic properties, vinegar is great for sanitizing toys!

Lemon Juice -  Cut a lemon in half and use it with baking soda to scrub dishes and remove stains. Add 1/2 cup lemon juice to 1 cup of olive oil for an all-natural furniture polish. Add juice to above vinegar solution to clean kitchen and bathroom floors.

Baking Soda - More commonly used as a deodorizer for refrigerators and freezers, baking soda can freshen up stale smelling carpets. Sprinkle the powder on your floor, let it sit for at least 10 minutes and then vacuum. It's a great scouring agent and cleans many ink, crayon, marker and pencil spots from painted surfaces.

Ketchup - Squeeze on a cloth and rub on brass and copper cookware to remove tarnish.

Rice - Use it to clean a thin-necked vase. Fill the vase three-quarters full and add one tablespoon of uncooked rice. Place your hand over opening, shake, then rinse.

Cornstarch - Pour onto grease spills on carpets. Let sit for 15-30 minutes then vacuum.

Cream of Tartar - Mix 2 teaspoons of cream of tartar with 2 teaspoons distilled vinegar for a natural non-abrasive cleaner. Apply to item, let sit for 5-10 minutes, then scrub. To clean aluminum, dilute 2 tablespoons cream of tartar in one quart of warm water.
