'Spring Breakers' is the sex and crime movie of 2013 (Trailer)

The full length international red band trailer for Harmony Korine’s “Spring Breakers” has been released and it looks as gloriously sleazy as you’d expect a movie about bikini clad armed robbers to be. In Korine’s (“Gummo”) latest film, four college students (Vanessa Hudgens, Selena Gomez, Ashley Benson, and Rachel Korine) rob a local dinner to fund a drug fueled spring break in Miami but find themselves jailed only to be paroled by a sinister drug dealer called Alien (James Franco). The only thing this trailer is missing is a Sleigh Bells song.

Usually I’m pretty ambivalent about Korine’s films, which are always well-shot but tend to meander, but there’s something about using a few ex-Disney kids in a sex and drugs filled romp that I found irresistible. Not because it’s transgressive to use some decommissioned Disney soldiers in a bawdy context but because the film harnesses the ugliness of real life arrests and public bad behavior into a tight two-hour fictional package. If Lindsay Lohan had been in a movie about the descent of a young teen star into coked out international jewel theft, it’d be amazing instead of tragic. No one wants to find out that Vanessa Hudgens was speeding around Miami in the company of a corn rowed drug dealer but a fake Hudgens tearing it up in the sunshine state is deeply fascinating the same way a well-executed movie car crash is better than gawking at a real life fatal accident.

The film will be released to Cleveland area theaters on March 22, 2013, which means that if says in theaters long enough, you could watch it in a double feature with Michael Bay’s Miami set crime film “Pain & Gain” which would undoubtedly be the best double feature of the year.
