Spring Break Special: Netflix Marathon Options Part 1

Contrary to Game of Thrones, winter isn't coming. In fact, it's leaving and thus Summer is right around the corner and Spring Break is already here. In honor of this warmer weather where you can lounge by the pool or have lunch out on your veranda, I’d like to suggest a few Netflix options for a TV Show Marathon. This way come Fall you'll be ready for some of the most popular series' returns.

The Walking Dead:

How many seasons? - 3 total, 2 on Netflix

What’s it about? – A small group of people living in a zombie-filled world must figure out a way to survive. Not only do they have to worry about zombies, they come across sensitive street gangsters, a family farm, and a crazy town ruled by the sadistic “Governor.”

What’s to love? – I still pick The Walking Dead as the successor to Lost in terms of its controversial issues and questions about life and death (i.e. How helpful can you be to strangers during an apocalypse? At what lengths will one go to survive?) All those good moral and ethical conundrums make for good drama and the cast is pretty phenomenal--even though plenty of them die eventually. You've been warned!

Pretty Little Liars

How many seasons? – 3 total, 2 on Netflix

What’s it about? – Don’t laugh because it sounds pretty ludicrous. Four high school girls are haunted by the infamous “A” that turns out to have little "A" minions. “A” seems to be responsible for killing their late friend, Allison, who was a royal b*tch when she was alive thereby upping the ante on possible suspects. In fact everyone, from parents, boyfriends, members of the police department and random visitors who are connected to the girls, all count as possible members of the “A” team.

What’s to love? – It’s called a guilty pleasure. None of it ever really makes sense but the girls are cute and their wardrobes range from super trendy to hip and classic to downright crazy town. The respective boyfriends aren’t bad looking either and seem to get their own storylines every now and then. It’s the kind of show where the main plot is pointless but provides for a great drinking game if you’re up for it.

Breaking Bad

How many seasons? 5 total, 4 on Netflix

What’s it about? – A chemistry teacher who discovers he’s dying of cancer teams up with an old student. Together, they make and sell crystal meth so that he can provide for his family long after he dies. Turns out he’s really good at making drugs and eventually becomes one of the most powerful meth bosses ever. Unfortunately, this ruins his personal relationships and makes him highly susceptible to being power hungry, immoral, and downright evil.

What’s to love? – First you love the idea of this sad, middle-aged man using his only talent to come up in the world. But then you see how greed and power can take over and eventually you realize he’s actually the bad guy of this whole disastrous saga. Watching his transformation is at times fun, shocking, scary, and ultimately tragic. Supporting characters on the show are a delight to watch and contrary to most shows, the seasons get better (as opposed to worse) as they go along.

The League

How many seasons? 4 total, 3 on Netflix

What’s it about? – A group of friends who are obsessed with Fantasy Football go about their daily lives while they smack-talk and try to one up each other every season.

What’s to love? – If you watch this show, you’ll quickly learn that it’s not just about Fantasy Football. It’s about zany characters like Taco, Ruxin, Andre, and Rafi. You’ll learn about the curse of the Shiva, what a Golden Gate Bridge is, and how many Eskimo Brothers you have. If you’re looking for a lot of laughs and want to be cool come Football season, this is the marathon show for you.

Well... these should hold you over for awhile. But I guess if you're like me you'll be done in about a week. Want more? Look out for Part 2 which includes a galactic drama, Hamlet on motorcylces, and a few workaholics...
