Even though winter has barely begun, players in the Lynchburg area are already thinking about the upcoming spring baseball season. Lynchburg Little League online registration is now open.
There will also be two walk-in registrations: on Feb. 23 from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. at the United Way Office across from the Miller Park fields and on Feb. 27 from 6-8 p.m. at McDonald's on Old Forest Road.
Lynchburg Little League, which has been in operation since 1957, is open to players living in the city of Lynchburg as well as parts of surrounding counties. You can find a recruitment area map on the league's website.
Although the league is open to ages 5-18, there's not usually enough player interest to field teams for ages 16-18 in the spring due to conflict with high school baseball season. However, if there's enough interest for one or two teams, the league will add teams in this age bracket.
Ages 5-6 play in the t-ball division, using softer baseballs and with all players batting in each inning. Ages 7-8 play in the coach pitch division with balls pitched by either a coach or a batting machine. Each half-inning ends when all players bat around or when there are three outs. T-ball and coach pitch division cost is $50 per player. Cost for ages 9 and up is $65 per player.
The Upper Minors division is for ages 9-10 and the Majors division is for ages 11-12. All games for these two divisions are played at Miller Park with kids pitching. Pitch counts are used so that pitchers aren't overplayed and the best players can qualify for post-season play on All-Star teams.
Ages 13-18 include the Juniors, Seniors and Big League divisions, all playing at Miller Park using the same rules as high school and professional teams. During the spring season, ages 13-15 usually compete in the Senior division.
Fields will open in mid-March and games will start in April for Upper Minors and Majors divisions and a little later for t-ball and coach pitch divisions. Games will start in May for the Seniors division.
Players who want to get a jump on the season can print a registration form at the Lynchburg Little League website for the Lynchburg College Baseball Winter Youth Camp. The camp dates will be January 14-17 from 6-8 p.m. and the cost is $100 per player.
Baseball season will be here before you know it so don't wait too long to register your kids to play. The Lynchburg College camp is limited to the first 50 paid campers and will include pitching, hitting and defensive drills.
