The first beautiful sunny warm March weekend was slightly marred by the alert from the Wisconsin DNR that particulate pollution in our air was at a dangerous level. For those who have asthma, allergies and lung conditions, Spring can be a difficult time of year.
Spring winds kick up the dust and dirt left behind by melting snow. As spring progresses, trees and flowers come into bloom. Pollen fills the air, and the damp spring rains can increase the level of mold. All of which can be difficult for people who are sensitive to these irritants.
The Traditional Chinese Medical approach (TCM) to these types of conditions is to look at the strength of the body. The TCM approach is to use various sensitivities that a patient may have as an indicator of what specific dynamics are weak in the body. Then develop a treatment strategy of diet, herbal medicine and acupuncture that will help strengthen the patient so that they can better withstand the environmental factors that affect them.
Ideally this type of treatment is started well in advance of the season that gives the patient the most trouble. There are also many things that can be done using herbal medicine and acupuncture during the season to provide symptom relief. If the problem is more of difficulty with the allergens of autumn, now is a good time to start preparing the body for that season. Talk to a Nationally Board Certified Practitioner of Oriental Medicine to find out how you can prepare your body so you can better enjoy the changing seasons.
