Jamison, a jazz aficionado and longtime DJ at WWOZ, aspired to help others to continue the jazz tradition of New Orleans. His efforts helped start the Heritage School of Music Band that teaches big-band playing to grade school aged musicians, create the "Strike Up the Band" program to acquire instruments for New Orleans area school bands, and put together a workshop series bringing musicians into schools and auditoriums to help students understand music and its history.

Since its creation in 1990 by Edward “Kidd” Jordan, the Heritage School of Music has provided free, weekly after-school instruction to teenagers from throughout the New Orleans area. Jordan’s philosophy has always been to offer young musicians a solid basis in music performance and theory so that they can find their own voice. Some of the students who have already worked through the Heritage School of Music are names that New Orleans music lovers are sure to recognize: Troy “Trombone Shorty” Andrews, Sammie “Big Sam” Williams, and Shamarr Allen, just to name a few.

The Heritage School of Music provides instruction to students throughout the greater New Orleans area from the age of 11 to 17; both beginning and advanced learning levels. Instruction is available in voice and the following instruments: brass, woodwinds, piano, bass, drums, and guitar.

Auditions for the Spring 2014 session will be held on Saturday, January 18 at 10:00 A.M. at Dillard University - Cook Fine Arts Center.
