Spring 2012 handbag trends: Color

The spring 2012 runway shows concluded last month, leaving handbag fans everywhere waiting with baited breath for the warm weather collections to hit store shelves. The handbags on the spring 2012 runways gave the fashion world a glimpse into the handbag trends which are continuing from 2011 and the trends which are making a fresh start for 2012. The biggest trend on the spring 2012 runways was the colored handbag.

Color was no secret on the spring 2012 runways. Designers gave the fashion world a rainbow of shades in both tonal ensembles as well as color blocking. The handbags on the spring 2012 catwalks followed suit and were bright, bold and full of color. While there were glimpses of neons and pastels, the bulk of the handbags offered vibrant, bold colors either alone or paired with other shades from the rainbow.

The most common colors found on the spring 2012 runways included tangerine (orange), red, yellow, candy pink, dark apple green and cobalt blue. Designers either created solid colored handbags or added contrasting shades to their handbags. Two-tone handbags were the most popular forms of color blocking on runway handbags such as satchels, totes, hobos, shoulder bags and clutches. Two-tone runway handbags were shown in two forms; contrasting trim or blocking.

The two-tone handbags which offered contrasting trim were solid in color and they featured handles, zipper pulls or edging in an added color. Sometimes the contrasting color was a neutral such as brown or black, while other times it was a new, bright color which was unexpected and created an unusual pairing.

The other types of two-tone handbags shown on the spring 2012 runways were color blocked. The color blocked handbag started to creep into style for spring 2011 and gained momentum as 2011 wore on. For spring 2012 color blocking is huge and designers are showing flap closures in a different color than the body of the handbag as well as other varieties of mixing hues.

Color is huge for spring 2012. If you did not invest in a colorful handbag from spring 2011, this is the time to grab one for 2012. Whether you prefer solid colors or color blocking, you cannot have a “fashion don’t” with a colored handbags this spring. Pick your favorite color and store that neutral black handbag for next year. Have fun with color and you will be a fashion icon in spring 2012.
