If your 2012 New Year’s resolution was to run a half marathon, you may want to make good on that promise in this weekend’s Walnut Creek International Half Marathon and 5K, the final event in the this year’s Northern California Half Marathon Series.
Back for its second year, the race features an all-new course to alleviate previous traffic blockages. The hope is to lessen the traffic impact on Ygnacio Valley Road, which became an issue during the inaugural race on Dec. 10, 2011 when a lane was blocked for the duration of the event.
Up to 5,000 runners are expected to line up for the start, scheduled for 7:00 a.m. at Walnut Creek's Civic Park. From there, runners will follow a clockwise loop route along Oak Road, Treat Boulevard and Cowell Road to the northern end of the Lime Ridge Open Space before turning right onto Ygnacio Valley Road, which they'll follow as it heads southwest all the way into Heather Farm Park.
Finishers of both the Half and the 5K will be awarded medals and Mylar blankets, along with deeper age group medals for both races. Peet’s Coffee will also be on hand to distribute free coffee (and goodwill!) to spectators and participants, alike, both during and after the race.
