Spotlight on the Delaware Center for Contemporary Arts

Help celebrate the 30th anniversary of Wilmington’s “Delaware Center for Contemporary Arts” (DCCA) on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, October 16-18.  Kick off the weekend on Friday evening in the Center’s ultra-modern home near the Christina Riverfront, with fabulous food, great music and a huge silent auction.  And you’ll want to spend the night in Wilmington, so you can participate in Saturday’s Kinetic Sculpture Race – well it’s actually more of a procession than a race but that’s what makes it so much fun!

While you’re at the Center for Contemporary Arts, you’ll definitely want to explore their cutting-edge exhibits, and there’s no better place to start than Allison Renshaw’s “Viva Glam” which runs from October 9 through November 22.  Her work features raucous collisions of colors and shapes in relatively large formats.  But the really creepy exhibit (certainly appropriate for this time of year) is “SHIFT: Kinetic Sculptures” in the Carole Bieber and Mark Hamm Gallery.  The “sculptures” include a clear plastic tube that runs the length of the gallery with water rushing through it, as well as hanging rods and wires whose movements are barely perceptible and completely silent.  But it’s the incessant thumping of an amplified heart beat that brings the entire installation to life.  You’ll think you’re standing in the middle of a giant ameba.

The Delaware Center for Contemporary Arts is conveniently located in a 35,000-square-foot building with seven galleries, 26 on-site artist studios, an auditorium, a museum shop, and a classroom, that the Philadelphia Inquirer described as "one of the most innovative and prominent facilities of its kind on the East Coast,"

TravelTip:  If contemporary art isn’t your cup of tea, walk a block to the corner of Justison and West Streets and take the Wilmington Trolley to the Chase Center on the Riverfront for the 17th Annual Delaware Home Show featuring green products, services, styles and ideas.   And when you get tired of being indoors, the Chase Center is only a couple of hundred yards from the newly christened Peterson Urban Wildlife Refuge and Dupont Environmental Education Center.
