By now fans of children's fiction and parents know, (if you have been following this column) that Humboldt County Library will be hosting the Humboldt County Authors Festival in October. The festival is an opportunity for school-aged children to meet and hear authors talk about their books and the creative process. It's also a time for families and individuals to purchase each author's books and meet those authors at a book signing on the last day of the festival. It's now time to shine the spotlight on one more of those authors that will be visiting Humboldt area schools and signing books in the fall; Erik Brooks.
Erik Brooks thought at one time he might be a brain surgeon but art and illustration won out and bibliophiles are the better for it. A childhood spent in Alaska is evident in some of this author's titles and illustrations. His first book, The Practically Perfect Pajamas, tells the story of Percy, a polar bear and the love he has for his footed pajamas. Other titles both written and illustrated by Erik Brooks include Octavius Bloom and the House of Doom, Slow Days, Fast Friends and Polar Opposites.. Illustrations by Erik Brooks can also be seen in former Humboldt County Author Festival author Shirley Climo's book, Monkey Business, and books by John Cross Giblin, Betsy Byars, and Deb Vanasse.
Erik Brooks will be visiting Pacific Union school and Redway school during his time in Humboldt County. His books can be purchsed online from retailers like Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and Borders. His books may also be purchased at northern California bookstores like the ones listed here.
