Drifting as defined by wikipedia
"Drifting refers to a driving technique and to a motor sport where the driver intentionally over-steers, causing loss of traction in the rear wheels through turns, while preserving vehicle control and a high exit speed. A car is said to be drifting when the rear slip angle is greater than the front slip angle prior to the corner apex, and the front wheels are pointing in the opposite direction to the turn (e.g. car is turning left, wheels are pointed right or vice versa), and the driver is controlling these factors. As a motor sport, professional drifting competitions are held across the world." - wikipedia
It doesn't take a huge power machine to drift successfully. Drifting is more of a balance of trajectory combined with the art of lost control. Even though the vehicle appears to be out of control, a well tuned drifting vehicle can maintain complete control at angles up to 40 degrees. The drifting community is growing at such a fast rate due to popularity and unique racing approach. Different styles of drifting competitions allow competitors to master several drifting traits and rise to the top of their preferred passion.
If you are interested in developing your own drifting technique and becoming a drifter, it's a good idea to learn the basics first. The following video series is a perfect guide to learning about drifting, but it doesn't substitute for practice. All drifters know that practice makes perfect! Your first drifting vehicle should be something you won't mind destroying. Most commonly found on first time drifters is bondo, dents, broken parts, and the car sitting in a repair shop.
You can save tons of money if you do your own work, most drifters prefer this over having a shop build them a vehicle. When you build the car yourself, you get to know all the little quarks that come with it. Understanding your vehicle completely is another extremely important aspect to drifting successfully. For now, take a look at the following videos and get a good understanding of the sport.
