Sporting KC re-signs Luke Sassano

Sporting Kansas City announced this week that midfielder Luke Sassano has signed a new contract with the team. Per club policy, terms of the agreement will not be disclosed. Sassano, 26, appeared in nine MLS matches for Sporting Kansas City last season, recording his first career goal in a 4-1 victory at FC Dallas. His season was shortened by injuries.

Sassano also appeared in Sporting KC’s in all of four U.S. Open Cup matches and also played in four Reserve League fixtures and the team’s scoreless draw against the English Premier League’s Newcastle United FC.

Despite not seeing the field as often as he would like in 2011, Sassano became a fan favorite and even has a sandwich named after him at the soccer friendly Pandolfi's Deli. Sporting KC declined to pick up his contract in the off season so Sassano was automatically entered into the MLS Re-Entry Draft. Sassano removed himself from the draft so that he could sign a new contract with Sporting KC.
