Spokane cat club’s advice on when to bring a new cat into the home,

Spokane cat lovers know if you've ever lost a beloved cat you have more than likely came to realize that there is no set time in the mourning process.  Those who usually aren't cat owners may censure you for your grief: "It was just a cat, for crying out loud!" they may say, actually believing they are helping you.

Clearly every person is an individual, and each individual faces dissimilar circumstances.  Often children make the fervent heart-tugging plea, "Couldn't we just look at the kittens at the shelters?” while others may feel something is missing in their lives since a cay has passed on, and they miss the solace and bliss of having a faithful companion at their side.  Others may see the need to add a new cat for a surviving cat that isn't used to being the lone feline.

No, you aren’t replacing the beloved feline that no longer dwells in your home.  The new cat should not be compared to the old one.  Cats are definitely individuals, even within the same breed.   Sometimes getting a polar opposite is more healing than getting one close to, but not exactly like the one you loved so   Cats are very alert to our emotional states and will know if they are really being cherished for who they are, an unaccepted cat is likely to behave poorly.

(If children are involved, talk to them about how they feel before adopting a new kitten.  .If you can’t say yes, yet, let them know just you can come back later.).

Having a young kitten to train can help boost your happiness in a time of such sadness.  Just make sure you are able to recognize the value of and love your new cat for the exclusive individual she/he is.

A new kitten may be utterly endearing, but older cats, by and large will find such young playmates to be a horrendous bother, though there are many exceptions to this general rule.

Give yourself time to grief, but there will come a time to get a new cat or kitten.  There are so many awaiting good homes.  Sometimes cats are known to just show up on doorsteps, stealing, and then healing grieving hearts.
