Spokane Animal Protective Services shutting down fairground operations

It has been over a month since Spokane County Regional Animal Protective Services [SCRAPS] seized 63 abused, starving and neglected horses from Janice Hickerson’s West Plains ranch. The abusive situation of the horses and the remarkable rescue reached national media attention. Now on Dec. 20, it is good to learn that 47 horses have either been adopted or have found foster families and rescue groups.

Most of the horses have been nursed along to regain good health while they were stabled at the Spokane fairgrounds. Many had been so neglected that they are still fighting their way back to health.

Four of the horses are heading to the 808 Equine Rescue in Calhan, Colorado, this weekend. The others that remain are going to a local boarding facility. Adoptions are being sought for all of the horses not yet placed.

The crew from the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals that have provided emergency help will be leaving Spokane on Dec. 22 but plans are to continue financial support and rehoming efforts.

An arrest warrant has been issued for Janice Hickerson [also known as Janice Long]. She is charged with first-degree animal cruelty and transporting and confining animals in an unsafe manner.

It is not know where Janice Hickerson AKA Janice Long is at this time.

Adoptive homes for the horses are needed. Additionally, it has been an expensive operation with high medical bills and any and all donations would be more than welcome. Please contact SCRAPS at 509-477-2532.
