“Remember this, puny humans. We came here for justice, not murder. So no one on your planet has died by our hands. And no one will. But we’ll make sure no one on Earth will ever forget what you are…liars, traitors and killers.” – Bruce Banner
World War Hulk was a sequel to 2006′s Planet Hulk where the Hulk was banished from Earth by the Illuminati and the Green Goliath returns to Earth seeking answers why he was sent away. While on planet Sakaar, Hulk has become stronger and wants revenge on the Illuminati so he heads to Earth in his spaceship while blinded by rage and blaming the Illuminati for the death of his wife, unborn child and millions of citizens of planet Sakaar without confirming whether or not the Illuminati caused the warp-core to explode. When Hulk reaches the moon, he easily defeats Black Bolt and then proceeds to New York City where he demands the presence of the Illuminati and that the city is to be evacuated. He leaves for a short time and heads to the X-Mansion to face Professor Xavier who was absent when the decision was made, but would’ve agreed to send Hulk away. The Hulk then proceeds to defeat several teams of X-Men as well as the Juggernaut, but when Hulk was shown the graveyard of mutants which happened during Decimation, Hulk spares Xavier and returns to Manhattan. Upon his return, Iron Man engages him in battle with an enhanced Hulk-Buster armored suit, but Stark is easily defeated while trying to subdue Hulk and Stark Tower is destroyed in the ensuing battle.
Afterward, Hulk battles Ghost Rider until he leaves and the Avengers engage Hulk shortly after, but are defeated along with Doc Samson and the Fantastic Four. The Hulk also crushes Doctor Strange’s hands which prevented him from employing mystic spells and after the Hulk becomes allies with Excello, Hercules, Namora and Angel, General Ross calls in the Army, but they are defeated and the Warbound transforms an arena into a gladiator arena. At Strange’s Sanctum Sanctorum, Hiroim and Elloe defeat Iron Fist, Ronin and Echo while Strange invokes Zom who helps restore Strange’s hands with spiked maces and he defeats Hiroim and throws him in front of the Hulk. Strange then attacks the Green Goliath, but is barely able to hold back Zom’s influence and he punches Hulk out of the arena onto a group of bystanders, then into a building which collapses onto more civilians. Strange then flies down to ensure the civilians are okay and discovers Hulk has protected them, then is beaten and imprisoned. The Hulk then places Black Bolt, Iron Man, Reed Richards and Strange in the arena where they’re outfitted with obedience disks and pitted against a gigantic tentacle monster but it’s defeated so Hulk sets the group against each other in a series of matches.
Reed defeats Stark and then is ordered to kill him while at the home of the Sentry, Bob sees the battle so he leaves to fight the Hulk. Meanwhile, Mung the Inconceivable takes Miek’s Hivelings on a rampage to hunt human stragglers and runs into Punisher who challenges Mung and decapitates him. Back at the arena, Hulk decides to spare the Illuminati but states he’s going to destroy New York City but the Sentry arrives and attacks the Hulk which destroys the stadium so the heroes and Warbound team-up to save the civilians while Sentry unleashes his full power. So much energy is used in the ensuing battle that the two revert to their human forms and Banner hits Reynolds with a punch which causes him to collapse while Miek states Hulk has not exacted his revenge and charges Bruce. Rick Jones pushes Bruce out of the way and is impaled which causes Bruce to transform into Hulk who punches Miek aside and Miek reveals he was the cause of the explosions on Sakaar and is immediately killed by Hulk. Stark then uses a device that nullifies gamma radiation and Hulk is defeated to be kept in a coma along with his Warbound members while on Sakaar, a long-haired figure arises from the planet’s surface which is discovered to be Hulk’s son Skaar.
