Viewers on the East Coast got the first hint just before the 10 p.m. ET break with a little teaser saying, “Coming up, Paul McCartney and a very special guest ...” But they did not say who that special guest was.

Then, just after the break, Julia Roberts was introduced. She made a short speech about how the Beatles came to America 50 years ago. She also talked about the tribute concert which will actually take place Jan. 27 and which will be aired on CBS on Feb. 9, 50 years to the day that the Beatles made their debut on “The Ed Sullivan Show.”

She then introduced Paul McCartney and a "special guest” … Ringo Starr. McCartney, Ringo and the band performed “Queenie Eye,” from Paul's most recent album, “NEW.”

Paul's wife, Nancy Shevelle, appeared on camera during the song and at the end of the song and did a triumphant double fist punch.

After the song, Ringo came down from his kit and Paul and Ringo hugged and stood there and waved to the crowd. Ringo also performed "Photograph" with several former All-Starrs, including Peter Frampton. CBS also ran a commercial for the tribute show.

The night was a huge win for Paul McCartney. He won five Grammys, every statue he was nominated for Sunday. He got to play again with his fellow Beatle Ringo Starr. And one of his songs, "NEW," was featured in a commercial.

And just think … the 50th anniversary celebration is just beginning.

(Thanks to Patti for the details contained here. And to CBS, you need to get this show live to the West Coast next year.)
