An aspiring local convention for one and all. (source: SpoCon)
In this lovely area, many conventions are concieved of, fewer see any real work, and even fewer come to any kind of fruition. Of that number, even fewer survive. SpoCon seems off to a good start, bringing science fiction authors, musicians, and even professionals in science under one roof with as much gaming (both video and otherwise) and caffiene as any gamer can handle, to combine into what turns into an exciting and interesting weekend for geeks, nerds, and mundanes alike.
SpoCon is put together by a large group of long-time gaming and sci-fi enthusiasts, most of which have prior convention experience. Video gaming features a number of tournaments, ranging from a Battlefield 2 tournament to a Peggle tournament, as well as several 'Games of the Hour.' Console gaming, albeit in a more ad-hoc format, will also be available, and should any players seek to take a break from their respective controllers, they will find a number of off-line activities, including a number of board, card and dice games, a fully-fledged, legitimate masquerade, and the Mad Marmot Social Club, an officially recognized and moderated 'room party,' sans the excessive drunkenness and fighting.
With all that, live music, and a number of other distractions, SpoCon appears set to ruin the rest of the year by comparison. This Examiner will be there, armed with camera and paper, ready to capture the event for posterity (as well as a number of people blinking at the wrong time or making long vowel sounds.)
