Our scriptures have described three types of welfare which are essential for all human beinngs. The spiritual welfare is known as 'adhyatmika', welfare from worldly elements is 'adhibhautika' and thirdly 'adhidaivika' is from supernatural elements.
The word in the mantra Mita-varuna is prana and apana which is the sir we breathe in and breathe out. The process of breathing is our life line and this starts at birth and ends with the culmination of our life, i.e., death. The welfare of our vital force is essential as spiritual welfare is both physical and mental.
The second type of welfare is known as welfare from worldly elements which is the most essential force in the world to live comfortably. This at least fulfils our necessities if not luxuries. this is called the path of riches.
The third welfare is described as welfare from supernatural elements. These forces are beyond the control of human beings. They are heavy rain, colossal fire, volcanic eruptions, hurricanes, snow storms, lightening, heat waves and earth quakes.
Finally, the mantra indicates that the earth, which is called in the Vedas, Mother Earth, the source of all precious materials, metals, gems, vegetation and herbs. may Mother Earth look after our welfare and be beneficial to us.
