Author Dani Shapiro, was recently interviewed on Oprah’s Super Soul Sunday series, where she discussed her spiritual crises. Her most recent book is titled, Devotion. Oprah describes this book as being written like a “spiritual detective story where she delves deep into her past searching for clues.” Clues about faith and God. Dani initially starting exploring her faith when her son asked her if she believed in God and she didn’t know what to tell him at his young age. An orthodox Jewish father and Atheist mother raised Dani.
You can only imagine the complexity of this upbringing.
After her parent’s tragic car accident that took the life of her father and injured her mother, Dani tried to reconcile this life-changing event. In her words, “This shock caused a fissure in me, a crack that allowed me to wake up. We don’t choose what’s going to wake us up.” Oprah talked about this wake up call “as a depth for greater meaning in life.”
Dani shared her greatest lesson, “I had felt, because I had been told what to believe… it wasn’t okay to build a spiritual life. You had to take the one that had been handed to you on a platter but you couldn’t create one and that people who did create them were seeking easy answers or cherry picking.”
She talked about how allowing herself to prioritize the importance of this search through this self-granted permission, she was able to enabled her journey and this allowed her to be okay with finding another way into this higher power through spirituality.
Her message presented here is for you to give yourself the right to be a seeker and as you seek perhaps you will recognize the divine in your everyday moments of life. For within the most ordinary, you can feel a sacred energy!
