Ace’s on Chestnut Street in Johnstown hosts Halloween Metal Night. Doors open at 8:00 p.m. for this hard rocking costume party. Three intense local bands – 10 Million Devils, Hopscotch with Landmines, and Samara – take the stage beginning at 9:00. Cover charge is just $5.
Looking for a more interactive fright with some new faces? Just 45 miles to the northeast you’ll find the craziest karaoke event around: Eat, Drink, & be Scary-oke. At kBand’s party in the Ramada’s Cosmopolitan Lounge (Duncansville, Penna.) you get to play dress up AND be part of the act. Who hasn’t dreamed of singing a favorite number in front of real musicians? Live rock karaoke begins at 9:30 p.m.

Back at Ace’s in the J, expect a huge crowd and some elaborate costumes for their 7th Annual Great Pumpkin Masquerade Ball. Doors open at 8:00 p.m. and you’ve got to enter the best costume contest by 9:30 to be eligible for cash prizes. For a mere $10 cover you’ll hear perennial favorite local bands Ribbon Grass, Shade of June, and YUM tear it up, beginning at 9:30. This not-to-be-missed show marks Stewie’s 10th anniversary with SOJ and Darren Buchko’s final show with YUM.
Over on Tire Hill Road in Johnstown, the house will be packed for “Feel the Heat of Helloween” at The Crow’s Nest at 10:30 p.m. Their turn out for best costume awards, drink specials, and a hard driving performance by Octane is sure to be impressive.
DJ Return to Turntables pumps out the mixes on Highland Park Road in Johnstown, at Woodside Bar and Grill’s 2nd Annual Halloween Bash. The scares start at 10:00 p.m. with costume prizes flowing throughout the evening.
Makeup and unsettling attire are always order of the night when Giants of Science rock the house at 4D’s Lounge. But at Halloween, YOU get to be part of the act. These guys nail a party groove like no one else, so the show is well worth the short jaunt to nearby Logan Avenue, Altoona, Penna. Lab rats who get there by 9:45 p.m. avoid cover charge and get to share a brew with the band.
If you’re up for a road trip to stranger lands, try Tubby’s Halloween Blowout on Inn Road in Duncannon (2 hours and 47 minutes to the East). They’re serving up PaneraA tribute band Penntera, Virginia-based Metallica tributists Vatallica, and Wasted Sylence, starting at 9:00 p.m.
By the time the 31st rolls around, your ears will still be ringing and you’ll be finding bits of greasepaint in cracks and crevices you didn’t know existed. And you’ll have a year’s worth of memories to share on Facebook!
