A Spirit Airlines fire scared passengers who described seeing a large fireball. CBS News reports on Oct. 16 that the flight had to return to the airport after engine problems. Passengers claimed they saw the engine explode, but they were able to land safely.
Flight 165 had left Texas and was headed to Georgia. The Spirit Airlines plane began to experience problems in the air, and passengers described hearing a loud explosion and seeing a fireball. They believe the engine exploded because smoke managed to enter the plane. Panicked passengers quickly began to text and email loved ones. Some of them also turned to social media to post about the plane.
Spirit Airlines explained that the pilot took control of the situation, and the second engine was functioning normally. This allowed flight 165 to safely return to Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport. No one was injured on the plane, and Spirit Airlines stated that all the passengers were able to find alternative transportation to Georgia.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) will be investigating the Spirit Airlines fire, and furloughed employees are being asked to return to work. An official has already stated that the engine failure was “uncontained.” This means that the plane was in great jeopardy from flying debris. Misty Pinson, a spokesperson for Spirit Airlines, denied that a fire occurred.
