Spielberg's War Horse snags six Oscar nominations

Steven Spielberg’s acclaimed “War Horse” movie picked up six nominations in top categories for the 84th annual Academy Awards.

Nominations were announced January 24th by Tom Sherak, Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences president, and actress Jennifer Lawrence during a special news conference in Beverly Hills, California.

“War Horse” Oscar nominations included:

  • Best Picture – Steven Spielberg and Kathleen Kennedy, producers
  • Cinematography – Janusz Kaminski
  • Art Decoration – Rick Carter, production design and Lee Sandales, set decoration
  • Music (Original Score) – John Williams
  • Sound Editing – Richard Hymns and Gary Rydstrom
  • Sound Mixing – Gary Rydstrom, Andy Nelson, Tom Johnson and Stuart Wilson

This marks the seventh Best Picture nomination for both Spielberg and Kennedy. Spielberg won the Best Picture Oscar in 1993 for “Schindler’s List.”

What is the “War Horse” movie?

The epic film, released just before Christmas 2011, tells the story of a boy’s horse that endures active duty during World War I. The movie was based on Michael Morpurgo’s 1982 novel of the same title, which became a popular stage drama in 2007.

The 84th annual Academy Awards, hosted by comedian and actor Billy Crystal, will be broadcast live from the Kodak Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center in Beverly Hills on Sunday, February 26th, beginning at 7 p.m. ET (or 4 p.m. PT) on ABC TV.
