The nominations for the 85th Academy Awards were announced on Thursday morning in a ceremony held at the Academy's Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills. Not surprising, Steven Spielberg’s epic biopic, “Lincoln” led the way with 12 nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor for the brilliant Daniel Day-Lewis.
Nine films received nominations for Best Picture this year but "Lincoln" appears to be the favorite going into the show next month. "Life of Pi", Ang Lee's incredibly beautiful tale of a boy lost at sea with a tiger, received 11 nominations this year, the second most of any film.
From 'Avengers' to 'Django' -- the top 10 films of 2012
Of course there were a number of glaring snubs in the nominations, especially in the category for Best Director. The biggest might be overlooking Ben Affleck, who seemed to be a shoe-in to garner a nomination. "Argo", Affleck's third directorial picture, received seven nominations, including Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Picture.
Kathryn Bigelow, who won Best Director a few years ago for "The Hurt Locker" saw her latest, "Zero Dark Thirty" snag a Best Picture nomination but no individual nom for her. Same for Tom Hooper, who won two years ago for "The King's Speech" but failed to get nominated this year, despite the fact that "Les Misérables" has been a critical success.
The live telecast was hosted by Seth MacFarlane and actress Emma Stone. Speaking of Seth MacFarlane, who will be hosting the Academy Awards when they air on February 24, 2013 -- the often controversial creator of "Family Guy" also received his first Oscar nomination, in the Best Song category.
