“Spider Woman's Daughter” written by Anne Hillerman was released on Oct. 1, 2013 by Harper Collins. The Navajo tribal cop mysteries continue with the return of officers Jim Chee & Joe Leaphorn, but more importantly Bernadette Manuelito who is now Jim's wife. Anne is the daughter of noted author Tony Hillerman (1925-2008) who wrote 18 mysteries surrounding Leaphorn & Chee or sometimes both. Four of Hillerman's books were made into movies, “The Dark Wind” 1991, “Skinwalkers” 2002, “Coyote Waits” 2003 & “A Thief of time” 2004.
According to the official website of “Amazon” the synopsis of “Spider Woman's Daughter” is right here - “Navajo Nation Police Officer Bernadette Manualito (Nickname is Bernie) witnesses the cold-blooded shooting of someone very close to her. With the victim fighting for his life, the entire squad and the local FBI office are hell-bent on catching the gunman.”
“Bernie, too, wants in on the investigation, despite regulations forbidding eyewitness involvement. But that doesn't mean she's going to sit idly by, especially when her husband, Sergeant Jim Chee, is in charge of finding the shooter.”
“Bernie and Chee discover that a cold case involving his former boss and partner, retired Inspector Joe Leaphorn, may hold the key. Digging into the old investigation, husband and wife find themselves inching closer to the truth...and closer to a killer determined to prevent justice from taking its course.”
At the 2012 “Tony Hillerman Writers Conference” which was held at Santa Fe, N.M. Anne spoke about her father while showcasing a picture slide show of him. She also announced at the time that “Spider Woman's Daughter” would be released by Harper Collins in the Fall of 2013.
Here is a small biography of Anne from Harper Collins. “Like her father, Anne began her career in journalism, working as a reporter for United Press International, as a writer and editor for the (Santa Fe) New Mexican, and as a columnist and editorial page editor for the Albuquerque Journal's Santa Fe edition. Today, she keeps her hand in journalism with weekly restaurant reviews for the Albuquerque Journal. Her writing and reporting were recognized with state and national awards, including honors from the National Federation of Press Women and the New Mexico Press Association.”
Author Craig Johnson who wrote the 'Walt Longmire' mysteries said this of “Spider Woman's Daughter" - "Chip off the literary block. There are a lot of things Tony taught his daughter Anne and one of them was how to tell a good story. 'Spider Woman's Daughter' is a proud addition to the legacy, capturing the beauty and breath of the Southwest as only a Hillerman can."
Craig Johnson's mystery books have been turned into a TV series called, “Longmire” on the A&E cable network. The mystery/drama garnered the highest TV ratings ever for A&E who renewed it for a third TV season in 2014.
