It was the big issue that replaced Peter Parker as the Amazing Spider-Man. The character of Spider-Man still exists, but now it's the Uber-Spider-Man--or Superior Spider-Man--as played by the notorious Doctor Octopus. And according to a report on Digital Spy on Jan. 15, 2013, despite the uproar among fans of the webslinger, sales have not been hurt, although they haven't yet reached the estimated sales for the issue. The sales for the Spider-Man #700 issue have reached $1.6 million dollars.
So far the sales in North America for the Spider-Man #700 issue have reached 200,966 units on the U.S. direct market. The decision to replace Peter Parker as Spider-Man followed a logic that could only appeal to Doc Ock himself
Otto believes that with the combination of his intelligence and Parker’s inherited memories and spider powers, he can be an uber-Spider-Man...He can live Parker’s life better than Peter could - from fighting crime to getting back together with on-again, off-again girlfriend Mary Jane Watson.
The move garnered quite a bit of attention and even death threats against the Spider-Man writer, Dan Slott, who spoke out against the people responsible for sending the threats. He said via various social media outlets
Reality check: There is NO such thing as a ‘funny death threat.’ Especially if you TAG someone in it.
The new webslinger will appear under the Marvel Comics NOW! title. The #700 issue had a sticker price of $7.99, but didn't top the 2012 bestseller, The Walking Dead #100, which sold almost 400,000 copies.
